Crimson Tide, Lady Tiders come up short at Southwood

SHREVEPORT – Minden High School tipped off basketball season Tuesday night versus Southwood.

In the boys’ game the Crimson Tide fell, 73-63. Despite the loss, head coach Alan Shaw was pleased with his teams performance.

“I wasn’t happy with the loss, but I was happy with some things we did,” Shaw said. “I thought the kids fought hard. Considering we’ve only had a couple practices together I thought we played pretty well together.”
In a hostile environment on the road, the Tide was down 20 points late in the third quarter before coming back to cut Southwood’s lead to 4 points.

“We definitely got some things out of this game that we can take as positives,” Shaw said. “We’ll try to show some improvement in our next game against Evangel.”

Anfernee Redd led the Tide with 21 points, followed by L’Jarius Sneed with 11 points, Kevin Hamilton with 8 points and Thomas Brown with 8 points.

The Lady Tiders fell to the Lady Cowboys 72-47.

The Southwood girls’ program has long been a powerhouse in the state with this year being no exception.
Despite the lopsided final score this was an 8 point game at the half at 35-27. Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown saw some encouraging things from his team.

“They came out pressing us,” Brown said. “Once we got in the flow of the game we handled the press well. Obviously we’re not pleased with the loss, but we competed for four quarters. We have to take care of the basketball and not allow teams extra possessions. Overall I’m proud of the effort.”

Sha’terra Batton led the Lady Tiders with 16 points. Tiaga Pugh was next with 15 points and Marlena Hill added 7 points.
