Doyline basketball tourney results

by Minden Press-Herald

The action continued last night at the Doyline tournament with three games played.
Lakeside vs. North DeSoto

In the boys bracket the Lakeside Warriors were able to turn up the heat on defense and crush the North DeSoto Griffins, 62-36.

It was a much needed win to get the Warriors back on track after tough losses to Benton and Byrd.

“We turned up our defense tonight and put a lot of pressure on North DeSoto,” Warriors head coach Jason Gould said. “We knew they were still working out some of the kinks from football so we pressured them pretty hard. They turned it over quite a bit and we were able to put them away pretty early.”

Lakeside led 12-6 in the first quarter, getting off to a bit of a slow start. The second quarter is where Lakeside dropped the hammer, outscoring the Griffins 20-9 to take a 32-15 lead into the half.

That was about as close as it got the rest of the way.

“We had a lot of people chip in tonight,” Gould said. “It was good for us to get back on the winning side. Now, we’ll play Doyline Saturday at 2 p.m.”

The Warriors and Panthers met earlier this season for the Battle of the Paddle, with
Lakeside taking the win in that game.

Lady Panthers vs. North Webster Lady Knights

The Doyline Lady Panthers met the North Webster Lady Knights for a first round matchup on the girls’ side of the bracket.

The game went to double overtime before the Lady Knights escaped with a 46-43 win.

Lady Panther head coach Watonya Jackson said she wished her team could have came out on top, but is pleased with the improvement her young team has shown.

“It was a close game,” Jackson said. “It was as good a game as my girls have played this year. Their attitudes have improved so much. They’re playing as a team right now and we’re playing some great defense.”

With the loss, the Lady Panthers were bounced from their own tournament.

Doyline got outstanding performances from Kayla and Tia Thomas. Kayla Thomas finished with 17 points, while Tia Thomas dropped in 16.

North Webster will advance to take on Haynesville, Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Lady Griffins vs. Lady Gators

The North DeSoto Lady Griffins won a tight game with the girls from Captain Shreve, 48-
44.

Carla Davis finished with 14 points to lead North DeSoto to the win.

The Lady Griffins advance to the second round of the tournament where they’ll meet the Woodlawn Lady Knights, Friday at 5 p.m.
