Finals set for Lakeside tourney

by Minden Press-Herald

Minden High vs. Doyline

Minden High and Doyline met on the consolation side of the bracket in the Don Stahl Memorial Tournament Thursday night, with the Crimson Tide coming out on top, 71-37.

It was a solid performance for the Crimson Tide coming off a gut-wrenching loss to Evangel in their first tournament game.

“We had a good ball game,” Tide head coach Alan Shaw said. “We played a complete game. I thought we looked a little more in sync offensively last night, our defense was pretty good. We got to get a lot of guys on the court and try some different combinations. Everybody played well.”

Leading the Tide in scoring was Kevin Hamilton with 14 points, followed by Thomas Brown with 12 and Davion Moore.

The Crimson Tide will have the night off Friday before taking on the winner of Haynesville/Byrd in the consolation bracket finals.

Lady Tiders vs. Lady Warriors

In girls semi-final action, the Minden Lady Tiders defeated the Lakeside Lady Warriors, 68-34. Minden controlled this game from the early stages with more full-court pressure on defense and a size advantage on the offensive glass.

In the first quarter Minden outscored Lakeside 24-6.

“I thought we did a good job of limiting Lakeside to one shot, rebounding the ball well,” Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown said. “We did a good job of moving the ball on offense to get good looks. Overall I was very pleased with the effort tonight. We still have some areas where we need to improve but with the win tonight we’ll have an opportunity to play for the championship Saturday night against Evangel at 6.”

Tiaga Pugh led the Lady Tiders with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Marlena Hill finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Sha’Terra Batton had 10 points.

Senior Cayla McKinsey led the Lady Warriors with 25 points.

Lakeside vs. Haughton

Lakeside boys defeated the Haughton Bucs to advance to the tournament championship game, 67-57.
The game was close the whole way, with Lakeside leading by 3 points at the half, and 2 points at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Lakeside was able to grind out the win thanks in part to good free throw shooting and veteran ball-handling.

“It was just one of those grind it out kind of games,” Gould said. “We had to get some big rebounds there in the fourth quarter, hit some free throws and take care of the ball.”

Quatarus Solomon led the Warriors in scoring with 18 big points. Frankie Miles dropped 16 points and Jamarion Teal cleaned the glass adding 14 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.

Next up for Gould and Lakeside is the championship game versus Evangel, Saturday night at 7:30.

“They’re very strong and tough,” Gould said. “We’ll have to pull out all the stops to take the big trophy home.”
