Glenbrook falls in season opener

by Minden Press-Herald

The regular season kicked off on Friday night at Glenbrook, though it was not the start the Apaches had hoped for.

After keeping the game within striking distance for the first 25 minutes, the Apaches ultimately fell 48-14 to Clinton Christian Academy in their first game of the season.

First-year head coach Drew Maddox said that Glenbrook will have to keep fighting and not get their heads down so early in the season.

“We were outmatched a little, they were a bit bigger and had more depth,” Maddox said. “But we’re going to get better. We have to work harder and do the little things better. We missed a lot of reads tonight and messed up some simple things that we can’t continue to do if we want to get better.”

Glenbrook quarterback Jackson Powell was a bright spot for the Apaches, throwing for two touchdowns. Powell agreed with Maddox that the team needs to get back to the practice field and work out the kinks.

“We have to play harder than everyone else if we want to win,” Powell said. “I need to do a better job of reading the defense, and we all need to work harder to get the offense running the way it should be run.”

Maddox told his team after the game that despite a tough first outing, it’s a long season and they have work to do to get ready for next week.

“We got hit in the mouth tonight,” Maddox said. “But we have to get back to work on Monday. It’s a long season.”

Maddox was confident that the Apaches will be better next week.

“We are going to flip this,” Maddox told his team after the game. “Guard against negativity, don’t let that get into your mind.”

Glenbrook will play host to Park Place Christian next week on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m.
