High school baseball: Glenbrook looks to continue string of upsets in semifinals

by Russell Hedges

So far in the select Division IV playoffs the No. 11 seed Glenbrook Apaches have eliminated No. 6 St. John and No. 3 Ouachita Christian.

The Apaches (15-10) will look for yet another upset Tuesday when they face No. 2 Covenant Christian (28-5) in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. at Sulphur’s McMurry Park, home of the Ochsner LHSAA Baseball State Tournament.

Glenbrook is making its second appearance in the state tournament in only its second season of eligibility for the LHSAA playoffs.

The Apaches fell to Ascension Catholic 4-1 in the semifinals last season.

Covenant Christian, located in Gray just north of Houma, lost to Ouachita Christian 7-0 as the No. 8 seed in the quarterfinals last season.

The Lions have defeated No. 18 Catholic-Pointe Coupee 5-3 and No. 5 Sacred Heart 9-5 in the playoffs.

Glenbrook defeated St. John 8-5 and Ouachita Christian 4-2.

Covenant Christian shared the District 6-5A championship with Central Catholic and Vermilion Catholic.

Central Catholic (24-7), the No. 6 seed, faces No. 1 Opelousas Catholic (28-6) in the other semifinal also at 5:30 Tuesday. Vermilion Catholic, the No. 4 seed, was upset by No. 20 Riverside Academy 3-2 in the second round.

Covenant Christian actually went undefeated in district on the field but had to forfeit its victory over Vermilion Catholic for inadvertently using a pitcher who was ineligible to throw because of the pitch-count rule, according to a report by by-usports.com.

The Lions’ losses were against 4A Assumption 2-0, 2A Dunham 4-3, 3A E.D. White 3-2 and 5A John Curtis Christian 10-1.

Covenant Christian has used three pitchers in the playoffs with junior Brennan Champagne starting both games.

Glenbrook junior Easton Sanders has pitched two complete games in the playoffs. He also went 2-for-3 against Ouachita Christian.

Centerfielder Seth Mangrum and catcher Landry Powell each had two hits against St. John. Hudson Glasscock had a big three-RBI double.

Sanders was 6-2 with a 1.33 ERA in the regular season. He had 83 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings.

He also led the Apaches in the regular season with a .412 batting average. First baseman Powell batted .407 with 18 RBI. Dawson Day had a team-high 21 RBI. Shortstop Jackson Waller batted .333 with a team-high 12 extra-base hits and 16 RBI.

The state championship game is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.
