STERLINGTON — The Lakeside Warriors had a tough task before them on Tuesday in the regional round of the Class 2A baseball playoffs.
The Warriors had to play a tough Sterlington High team that had plenty of playoff experience.
But Lakeside senior Preston Gray dazzled on the mound and the Lakeside bats responded and the Warriors advanced with a 12-1 win.
"Sterlington is a good veteran team, and it was good to see our kids rise to the occasion," Lakeside head coach Bob Gray said. "This was a big win for us, because it's been a few years since we've gotten past the second round of the playoffs. And that was one of our goals when we started this thing, and now we've accomplished that. Now our next goal is to go out and see if we can win the next one."
Lakeside started quick, as they busted out in the top of the first inning with four runs, the big blow was a three-run home run by Koty Monday.
"That home run kind of sealed the deal early," Gray said. "When he hit that one, their heads went down."
The Warrior offense didn't let down as they scored five more runs in the second, two in the third and one more in the fifth.
The Warriors wouldn't need all those runs as Preston Gray was almost perfect on the mound. He went all five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out 10.
"It was a very dominating performance," coach Gray said. "He went out and took care of business. We had in mind to split up our pitching all the way through, but he went out and did such a good job we couldn't bring ourselves to take him off the mound."
Monday led the offense with his three-run homer and a single, and Tyler Wallace went three-for-four. Brooks Gray had two hits and Preston Gray, Garrett Lambert, Timothy Griffith and Tre McDaniel all added base hits.
The Warriors will now advance to a quarterfinal match-up with the winner of Sacred Heart and Opelousas Catholic, who play today.
