Leatrice Clair Miller passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Promises Acute Care Hospital in Bossier City. She was 88.
"Lea" was born Oct. 16, 1924 in Minden to C. V. and Eunice Henry McCollum. She graduated from Minden High School in 1942, and soon after, made a courageous move to Washington, D.C. to work for the civil service commission. When she returned to Minden she went to work for the railroad, where she remained until marrying 1st Lt. Woodrow S. Miller on June 21, 1946 and embarking on the life of a military spouse. The next 16 years were spent at various Air Force Bases in the United States and France.
The couple retired to Minden in 1962 and soon after she became secretary for E.S. Richardson Elementary School, a position she held for more than 20 years. During that time she was an active member of the Minden Business & Professional Women's Club. She served the club as treasurer, and was a winner of the coveted "Woman of the Year" (Nike) Award. She was also a longtime poll worker, with many of those years spent as commissioner-in-charge.
Mrs. Miller was a lifelong member of Minden Presbyterian Church, which she served as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School secretary, and treasurer. At the time of her death she was the church's oldest member.
Mrs. Miller is preceded in death by her husband, Major (Ret). Woodrow S. Miller; and a daughter, Janet Miller.
She is survived by her son, Tommy Miller of Minden; a daughter, Marilyn Miller of Minden; a granddaughter, Lexi Hutchinson of Shreveport; a grandson, Lance (and Jessica) Miller of Shreveport; three great-grandchildren, Jade Hutchinson, Grace Miller and Hudson Miller; a sister, Martha Carleton of Minden; a very special aunt, Evelyn Miller of Minden; nieces, Sharon Irwin, Patti Guin, Carolyn Marsh, Cathlyn Braunig and Lisa Spencer; nephew, Chris McCollum; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and sweet friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Minden Presbyterian Church. Rev. Gary Miller and Rev. Sammy Morrow will officiate. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory under direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home. Visitation will take place from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Minden Rose-Neath Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Chris McCollum, Lane Davidson, Brian Davidson, David Miller, Larry Willett and Billy Guin. Honorary pallbearers will be elders of Minden Presbyterian Church.
