Drayton D. Modisett

Drayton D. Modisett

A memorial service/visitation for Drayton D. Modisett (the bubble gum man) will be held at Shongaloo Civic Center Sunday March 25, 2012, from 2 until 5 p.m.

Mr. Modisett was born in Shongaloo on August 18, 1938 and entered into rest on March 13, 2012.

He graduated from Shongaloo High School in 1956, and then attended SAU on a basketball scholarship. Mr. Modisett went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as a (land) sailor for 20 years. There he copied Morse code that required a high level of security. In addition, he traveled and played on the Navy basketball and softball teams and competition boxed while serving in the military. He graduated from Anchorage Community College with an Associate Degree.

After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Mr. Modisett returned to his hometown of Shongaloo and was employed with several oilfield companies. He also went on to retire from the State of Louisiana Dept. of Corrections. He spent many springs and summers coaching his daughters' and grandkids' softball, baseball and basketball teams and rarely missed any of their athletic events. He enjoyed coaching other youth and helping them improve their athletic skills. He had a love of the game that is unsurpassed. He was also an avid bicyclist and was known to ride 100 miles on several of his birthdays after turning 65. He enjoyed hunting, spending time with his American bulldog, riding horses, teaching self-defense and weight lifting. Mr. Modisett attended New Era Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his father, Durell Modisett; mother, Mildred Haynes Modisett; and brother, Lane Modisett.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jan Modisett; daughter, Suzette Edwards and her husband, Ronald; daughter, Carla Stephens and her husband, Heath; grandchildren, Dakota Edwards, Jacob Edwards, Sawyer Stephens, Gunner Stephens and Piper Stephens; and sister, Nell Rose Duke and her husband, Waylon, all of Shongaloo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home at P.O. Box 929, Ruston, LA 71273, the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home at P.O. Box 4196, Monroe, LA 71211, donate blood or the charity of your choice.
