Johnny Rowland leaves Lakeside as principal

Principal Johnny Rowland has left Lakeside High School and taken a position with the Webster Parish school system as its new personnel director and middle school supervisor.

He says it was a bittersweet decision, but he felt it was the right move.

“It was an opportunity, I feel, to serve the district in a different role,” he said. “It was certainly a job that appealed to me, because I like the challenge of being involved in the hiring process, finding and locating and interviewing good teacher prospects and supporting them, and hopefully finding people that will help our parish to continue to grow and improve.”

In July, personnel supervisor Charlotte Dean announced her decision to retire and the position came open. Rowland told his staff upfront he applied for the vacant position the first day of school.

He continued in his role as principal and Friday, Aug. 21, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dan Rawls called him to wrap things up at the school and come to Central Office. His first day was Monday.

Rowland began at Lakeside as a teacher and coach in 1998. He became assistant principal in 2003, and returned in 2011 to take the helm as principal.

He says Lakeside is a good school with a strong network of teachers, coaches, parents and students.

“It was a tremendous job,” he said. “I did not really get a chance to stay goodbye to the students because of the timing, but Lakeside is a good school. It’s well run; they have good staff and parent support. Because of that, it will continue to run and do well.”

In Monday’s meeting, the school board voted to open the position and begin advertising to fill it. Michelle Finley is acting principal.

At Doyline, Maz Bursey has taken the position of assistant principal following the vacancy left when Guy Sanders took a position at Lakeside. Sanders has since moved to Central Elementary as assistant prinipal.
