J’Son Turk has formally been charged with one count of first degree murder for the August shooting death of Omar Lott and the teenager originally charged with murder has had his charges dropped.

Bossier-Webster District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said a Webster Parish grand jury handed down an indictment Monday against the 18-year-old Turk. Another teenager, Murphy Lee Robertson, 18, had originally been charged in Lott’s death, but Marvin said Turk finally admitted to investigators that he fired the fatal shots.

“After he was Mirandized, Turk gave a statement admitting to being the shooter,” Marvin said. “He admitted to details of the crime that no one else but police knew and only the shooter would have known.”

Marvin said a decision has not been made at this time on whether or not the death penalty would be sought in the case.

“That decision is still a long way down the road,” Marvin said

Charges against Robertson, including first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm, have been dismissed, Marvin said. The murder charge was dismissed in light of Turk’s confession; the firearm charge was dropped as the result of information learned as investigators continued to look into the case, Marvin added.

“Investigators determined the handgun found in the vehicle in which Robertson was a passenger was legally purchased by and registered to the driver of the vehicle,” Marvin said.

Marvin said Robertson is still under investigation by another state agency.

“Charges against him originating from our office have been dropped, but probation and parole still has an active hold on him,” Marvin said.

Marvin said a second person in custody in connection with the shooting death could be looking at an upgrade in charges. Dylan Turk, 16, originally was charged with principal to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Dylan Turk is being held as an adult in the case.

Dylan Turk is also charged with obstruction of justice for giving false statements early in the investigation which implicated Robinson. Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton said his investigators discredited the initial stories and learned that J’Son Turk fired the fatal shots and Dylan Turk helped hide Lott’s body.

“Dylan Turk will probably be charged as an adult with accessory after the fact to first degree murder,” Marvin said. “We will determine whether or not his conduct constitutes a conspiracy.”
