Lake Charles may change marijuana ordinance

by Associated Press

LAKE CHARLES — The Lake Charles City Council will review an ordinance to amend the city’s code on possession of pot and synthetic marijuana to comply with state law that Gov. Bobby Jindal signed last month.

The American Press reports the law lowers the penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. People now caught with less than 14 grams of marijuana will face up to 15 days in jail.

Those caught with more than 14 grams but less than 2.5 pounds would face up to six months.

The law also moves the maximum prison term on offenses from a felony charge with a 20-year sentence to a felony with an eight-year sentence.
The council will vote on the ordinance Aug. 5.
