Lakeside Warriors hope to ground Homer Pelicans

The Lakeside Warriors are celebrating homecoming this week. Homecoming is always a fun time with spirit days, homecoming floats, a dance and the return of alumni. That’s all fun, but the Warrior football team isn’t worried about any of it. Their mind is on the game taking place Friday night against a familiar foe, the Homer Pelicans.

“All we ask of our kids is that when they are at practice they’re focused on what we need to do,” head coach Joey Pesses said. “We want our guys to be involved in as many activities at school as they can, but we have to make sure we take care of our business when we’re on the field.”

On the field, the Warriors are 2-4 this season, looking for an important win to keep them in the playoff hunt. They have been working hard to prepare for a Homer team that’s got plenty of athletes.

“Depending on what part of practice you’re watching we looked good,” Pesses said. “We looked good in our scheme getting in the right positions. Right now we’re emphasizing that we need to finish.”

The key to finishing this week will be wrapping up the talented Homer skill players.

“It kind of resembles what we faced last week,” Pesses said. “In terms of athletes they’re very similar to Red River. When they make mistakes we have to capitalize whether it be a big play or a turnover. Then, at the same time we have to be sure not to give them anything by turning it over.”

The Warriors and Pelicans will square off at Lakeside starting at 7 p.m.
