Lakeside wins a thriller over Homer on homecoming

SIBLEY — The Lakeside Warriors pulled off a wild 23-22 victory over the Pelicans from Homer High School on homecoming night.

The Warriors entered the game coming off a tough loss last week versus Red River, desperate for a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive with some tough games coming up.

It was a win that head coach Joey Pesses found difficult to put into words.

“I don’t really know how we did it,” Pesses said. “I told the guys before the game that someone had to step up and set a fire under this team. I also told them it had to be someone that no one expected, and I thought I had several young guys step up on the defensive side of the ball.”

The Warriors won the game with their offense operating at less than their best.

“Offensively, we didn’t really set the world on fire,” Pesses said. “But when they needed to, they stepped up and made big plays.”

It’s a win that speaks volumes to how far this team has come from the start of the season until now.

“You have to learn how to be in that situation,” Pesses said. “This week we finished it. We continued to pound it and our guys did enough to win it. They really looked adversity in the face and decided they were going to win this one.

Lakeside was up by nine late in the game when Pesses said Homer made an adjustment to what the Warriors were doing defensively.

“We were up by nine and going in to score but we layed it on the ground,” Pesses said. “They came out following that turnover in a completely different formation than they had been running all night. They drove down and scored, but then we were able to talk to our linebackers and make the adjustment to preserve the win.”

Leo McCarter made the big play for Lakeside by returning a second half interception 85 yards for a score.

Offensively, the Warriors were led by Ahmad Bishop’s 110 yards. Thomas Lambert rushed for 55 yards while passing for 46 and a touchdown to Frankie Chanler. Darryl Moore added 25 hard yards on the ground for Lakeside.

The Warriors will travel to Shreveport to take on Calvary next week.
