Lessie was born Jan. 8, 1941, in Homer to the union of the late Walker and Annie Rene Harris. He was the seventh of nine children.

Lessie was reared in a Christian home. He accepted Christ at the early age of 13 and united with Springhill C.M.E. Church. Lessie was president of many committees with the church: Cemetery Committee, Steward and Trustee Board and Building & Remodeling Committee of Springhill C.M.E. until his death.

Lessie graduated from Homer High School in 1960. In 1964 he met and later married Lizzie Morris. He was a loving husband and father. Lessie earned his living working as a diesel mechanic and later promoted to job foreman for L.J. Earnest Trucking Company. His love for diesel trucks and desire to provide for his family inspired him to purchase Plain Dealing Trucking Co., Inc. in 1987. He was known as Jr. Harris in the trucking and construction business. He strongly believed in inspiring others to do their best and furthering their education. His motto in life was, “We will make it work.” Until the decline in his health in November, Lessie continued to manage his trucking company. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman and farmer.

Lessie was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Mae Harris Webb and Annie Mae Harris Webb and three brothers, Erdis Harris, Verdis Harris and Henry Harris.

Lessie leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Lizzie Harris; children; grandchildren; two brothers, Wallace Harris (Bessie) and Walker Harris; two sisters, Hazel Madawaki and Everlean Manning; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Lessie Harris will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, at at Mt. Zion CME Church with the Rev. Lonnie Sneed officiating. Interment will follow at the Springhill CME Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24 in the chapel of Kennon’s Mortuary.
