CULLEN — A Sarepta man is dead after being struck by two vehicles while he was walking on U.S. Highway 371.

Louisiana State Police say it happened shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday a mile south of La. Hwy. 802 in the Porterville community, about three to four miles north of Sarepta.

Tommy Helms, 67, was walking in the southbound lane U.S. 371 when he was struck by a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer being driven south by 57-year-old Brenda Smith, of Sarepta, says a statement from Senior Trooper Michael Reichardt.

The impact threw Helms into the northbound lane, where he was hit by a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu being driven by 66-year-old Barbara Mills, of Springhill.

Helms was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the Webster coroner’s office.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis, the state police statement says.

There’s no indication at this time of what Helms was wearing nor why he was walking on the highway.

The crash remains under investigation.
