The Minden High School band received a donation from Cultural Crossroads to help them purchase instruments.

Band director Curtis Mills III says he will go through the current instruments and assess the needs before making purchases.

“This is huge, the contribution they were willing to make,” he said. “I think hopefully it’s bright beginnings from here on out.

Chris Broussard, executive director and co-founder of Cultural Crossroads, says the donation came from gate fees at the Spring Arts Festival this year and they have decided to do the same next year.

“The reason we did that was because I’d gotten word they were struggling and to date no one had stepped up to offer any assistance,” she said. “So we decided to dedicate our entire proceeds to them, and they worked the gate. Our hope is that by us stepping forward and lending a hand – I really do think it’s going to be outside school resources that actually partner with the schools to fill in those gaps. It’s not much, but it’s a start.”

The band has a booster club of dedicated parents who try to help fill in those gaps. Mills praised the booster club, calling it “dynamic.”

“The parents are there,” he said. “We have an amazing set of parents.”

Mills says he tries to instill a sense of family in his band of roughly 40 members, and the music comes with it.

“The kids do a really great job of creating a family atmosphere here,” he said, “and I’m more proud of that than anything.”

For those who wish to make a donation, they may do so by mailing their contribution to the MHS Band Department, P.O. Box 838, Minden, LA 71058. For more information, call the school at 377-2766 and the prompt will take you to the main office.
