North Webster’s Devin White enjoys Five Star Challenge

by Minden Press-Herald

Over the past year, Devin White has emerged as a big time prospect coveted by top programs across the country, and last weekend White put his skills on display in Baltimore at the Rivals Five Star Challenge.

The Five Star Challenge is an event held at the Baltimore Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium, inviting some of the nation’s top talent to come and compete against one another in a variety of ways.

“When we first got there it was just a lot of interviews and talking to the reporters,” White said. “The next morning everything jumped off around 8:30 a.m. with drills and then one-on-ones.”

White performed well at both the running back and linebacker spot, once again flashing the size and athleticism that has scouts drooling.
White also had a chance to visit Under Armour Headquarters.

“They showed us a lot of new stuff,” White said. “It was crazy.”

One thing White wasn’t prepared for was the weather.

“I didn’t know it wasn’t going to be hot up there so I had my hoodie on,” he said. “The city of Baltimore is different.”

Having been busy on the camp circuit, White said there were some familiar faces in attendance.

“Rashard Lawrence from Neville was there too,” White said. “Really there were a lot of people there I knew, and there were a lot of people there who knew me, I guess because at every camp I’ve stood out.”

As one would expect when a large group of top prospects get together, there’s plenty of politics going on behind hotel room doors and in between drills to try and lure uncommitted players to certain schools.

White is no exception.

“Yeah a couple guys try to get in my ear,” White said. “Saivion Smith from Florida (committed to LSU) was talking to me. He was like ‘Come on bro, come on and join the Tigers.’ A couple Auburn commits too, just a lot of guys telling me to check out this place or that place.”

With a large number of 2016 making early verbal commitments, don’t expect White to announce anytime soon, as he is determined to take his time before making a decision on his future.

White will continue his busy summer with a trip to the pacific northwest in July for The Opening, an event similar to the Five Star Challenge put on by Nike in Beaverton, Oregon.
