Tide preparing for tough matchup against North Webster

by Minden Press-Herald

The Minden Crimson Tide don’t have time to feel sorry for themselves about last week’s loss to the Haughton Buccaneers. On the contrary, a fast rebound is needed, as this week brings the renewal of a long-standing rivalry game, or depending how you look at it, the start of a new one.

North Webster High School will host Minden in the first ever meeting between the two schools since Springhill, Sarepta, Cotton Valley and Shongaloo consolidated in 2011.

“I think it’s going to be a very exciting situation,” Minden head coach Spencer Heard said. “I think that crowd last week helped prepare us for this week, playing a tight ball game in front of a big crowd.”
Heard said he is glad the two schools are renewing the rivalry.

“I think it’s a game that a lot of people in Minden are glad we got back on the schedule,” Heard said. “It’s good for the parish to have this game. It should create a lot of interest for both schools and parish football as a whole.”

On film, Heard said the Knights look like a tough team, starting with their running back.

“I think they’re a solid team,” Heard said. “Obviously they have some good players with Devin, their other running back and that whole defense. All the linebackers are good, the defensive line is pretty solid. They mixed things up with their front against Haynesville and Homer, so we have to game plan for multiple situations.”

When the Knights are on offense, Heard said his Crimson Swarm defense will have to be wary of the passing of Cameron Huff, an improvement at the quarterback position for Knights’ head coach John Ware. He, coupled with North Webster’s backfield duo, should make this another tough week for the Tide.

“Devin’s definitely got some talent,” Heard said. “Our guys are eager to play him, just like I’m sure they’re ready to play us. We just have to go tackle him at the line, because once he gets going in the secondary that’s when he’s really dangerous. The quarterback is better than the one they had last year, we can’t get caught up looking in the backfield.”

The Tide will be without one of their starting tackles, Hunter Alford, who is having surgery to repair a torn tendon in his ankle. Other than that, the Tide will enter this game fairly healthy following a physical battle with the Bucs one week ago.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. at North Webster High School.
