22 Hands-Up offers financial literacy class for Minden youth

by Amber McDown

Local nonprofit 22 Hands-Up held a free financial literacy class on Tuesday, September 24, at the Minden REC. Sponsored by b1BANK, the session was presented by Will Campbell of the b1 FOUNDATION. Around 30 people attended the event.

Designed for students aged 11 to 18, the class aimed to provide essential financial skills for future success. Campbell outlined various career paths, including university, vocational/technical school, military, and entering the workforce directly, offering insight into different life choices. He emphasized the importance of planning and goal setting, distinguishing between short-term, intermediate, and long-term objectives.

Campbell also discussed budgeting, encouraging students to track their spending, identify income and expenses, and analyze cash flow. He stressed the importance of distinguishing between “wants” and “needs,” urging them to resist peer pressure. “Don’t spend more than 50%, 60% tops, of your income on expenses,” Campbell advised.

“It’s all about being good stewards of your money. Don’t spend more than you make; be an asset, not a liability,” he said, also encouraging students to start saving early.

Throughout the class, Campbell explained financial terms such as debit, credit, income, expenses, and collateral, among others. He concluded by thanking attendees, saying, “I hope you learned something; there’s so much more.”

The b1 FOUNDATION regularly partners with nonprofits, schools, and civic organizations to provide financial literacy programs, offering students in Minden valuable tools for building a successful future.
