In a visionary move that promises to redefine summer learning experiences, your Webster Parish Libraries are embarking on an exciting new journey with the introduction of Discovery Camp 2024. This innovative initiative marks a significant departure from the traditional summer reading program, aiming to immerse children across Webster Parish in a rich tapestry of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) enrichment and literary exploration.
Webster Parish Libraries Discovery Camp 2024 will offer a diverse range of learning opportunities that go beyond traditional reading. While reading will remain an integral part of camp, this summer’s focus is engaging young minds in a wide array of learning experiences geared toward school-aged juveniles.
By incorporating STEM enrichment programming blended with literacy, the aim is to complement and reinforce the invaluable learning experiences already provided by local schools throughout Webster Parish.
“As the first public library system in our area to host a STEM based camp in place of a traditional Summer Reading Program, we are excited for this revamp,” said Kim Sentell, Director of Marketing for Webster Parish Libraries.
“Our parish is very fortunate to have a very forward-thinking library director, Savannah Jones, who recognized a need for a shift from traditional summer reading programs to immersive STEM enrichment experiences, which represents a strategic response to the evolving landscape of education and technology. By embracing STEM education, our libraries are not only equipping children with essential skills for the future but also fostering a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom,” added Sentell.
Behind the scenes, the Youth Services Coordinator, Cassidy Duck, has been an instrumental force, working hard to curate a lineup of special performances and programs perfectly aligned with the STEM enrichment focus of Discovery Camp 2024. With a keen understanding of the unique interests and preferences of children in the area, Cassidy has carefully handpicked events designed to captivate and inspire young minds, igniting their enthusiasm for exploration and discovery.
These dedicated individuals, along with the entire team at Webster Parish Libraries, are committed to providing children with unparalleled educational experiences that will not only enrich their summer but also set them on a path of lifelong learning and discovery.
The excitement doesn’t end there! Webster Parish Libraries are pulling out all the stops to ensure that Registration Day for Discovery Camp 2024 is an event to remember. Scheduled for Saturday, June 8th, families are invited to the Minden and Springhill locations for a day filled with entertainment and exploration. What’s the highlight of the day? The Discovery Dome, a state-of-the-art inflatable dome theater provided by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, will be onsite. Registration events will take place at the Minden branch location from 9:00 AM to 12:00 and at the Springhill branch location from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. With limited seating, registration to attend a showing is necessary in order to ensure everyone gets an opportunity to experience the wonders inside the Discovery Dome.
Once registered, campers will embark on a month-long journey of discovery, filled with enriching activities and captivating performances. From special appearances by ‘Wild World Texas’ and the ‘Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to mesmerizing acts by “Lady Chops” and ‘Mitch the Magician,’ every day of camp promises new adventures and opportunities for growth.
Throughout the four-week duration of Discovery Camp 2024, campers will have the opportunity to earn ‘library bucks’ for every book read or special performance attended. These ‘bucks’ can then be traded for many enticing rewards, incentivizing children to engage actively with the wealth of resources available to them. At the end of camp, campers who read ten or more books will receive a certificate of participation and be invited to attend a special gathering just for them. Children who read 50 books will receive a certificate of completion, a special reward, and a medal at the end of camp. All reads must be logged in Beanstack.
