Jerry and Cindy Madden hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Big Free Library at their home on Gladney Street near Victory Park on September 10. The new library, which offers free books to the public, also serves as a depository for retired American flags in need of ceremonial disposal.
“I wanted to do something a little bit different,” Cindy Madden said. “I thought that there was a need in Minden that we needed to fill, and to provide a place that was easy to get to, to dispose of American flags correctly.”
Funded by the Dorcheat Bistineau Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the library features patriotic and Christian materials. DAR State Regent Cheryl Gott helped welcome the library to the community during the event.
Local leaders, elected officials, members of the Sons of the American Revolution, the American Legion, and others attended in support. Spencer Creech, Congressional Silver Medal winner representing the Children of the American Revolution, was also present.
Principal Daniel Lee of Central Elementary School made the first flag deposit, followed by other organizations.
The Maddens thanked the Minden Coca-Cola plant for donating signs for the event and all who came out in support. Mrs. Madden also announced that the Webster Parish Library will soon feature a display celebrating Constitution Month, set up by the DAR.
This event marks a unique addition to Minden’s community resources, blending the promotion of literacy with a patriotic service.
