The Dorcheat Historical Museum hosted its annual gala fundraiser on September 9, featuring a lively cake auction that helped raise nearly $22,000 for the museum. The auction was led by board member Dr. Richard “Feel Good” Campbell and Tracy Campbell of Meriwether Wealth & Planning, who entertained the crowd throughout the event.
Among the cakes auctioned, a Double Chocolate Cake from Geaux Fresh brought in the highest bid of $501. The event drew at least 94 attendees, making for a successful evening.
“It’s really, really good to see this room this full,” said Jessica Gorman, the museum’s executive director.
The funds raised during the gala will significantly contribute to the museum’s annual budget of just under $47,000. Gorman explained that the fundraiser plays a crucial role in supporting the museum’s operations.
“The Webster Parish Police Jury and Mayor Nick Cox have generously provided $2,500 each… and we have also been fortunate to receive a Culture Care Fund Grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities,” said Gorman. However, the gala remains the museum’s largest source of income.
In addition to the gala, the museum generates revenue through individual and business donations, as well as the sale of locally published history books. Gorman emphasized the importance of community support, noting that even small contributions can have a meaningful impact.
“If every person who loves our local history would make a contribution, it would make a significant difference,” she said. “For instance, during this year’s Give for Good campaign, we received a $10 anonymous donation. That $10 did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.”
The Dorcheat Historical Museum, located at 116 Pearl Street, is open to the public with free admission, offering visitors a chance to explore and learn about the rich history of Webster Parish.
The museum continues to rely on community support to fulfill its mission of preserving and sharing local history, and they will accept donations throughout the year.
