Board says yes to fixing Browning Elementary drainage issues

Plans to fix drainage issues at Browning Elementary will soon get underway.

The Webster Parish School Board gave Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dan Rawls authority to enter into a contract with Cody Goodwin to study and draw up plans to deal with the issue.

“We have some water issues, water running into the building every time it floods,” he said. “They are unloading all the visitors, children and staff at one place, and it floods, not to mention it’s not ADA; there’s no handicapped ramp there. So, if a child is in a wheelchair, you have to roll him in the rain to get him in there.”

He says the first thing they need to do is get the water problem under control. Once that is done, they will come back and do some pavement work, rerouting of traffic and bus drop-offs, and adding some canopies. He says they will also make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Goodwin is also doing the plans for the drainage work at North Webster High School, Rawls said.

Once the cost is figured, Rawls will bring it back before the board to bid it out.

The school board also approved:

n bids from Flowers Baking for bread, Oak Farms Dairy for milk products and Sysco Foods for frozen dairy products.

n the 2016-17 consolidated budget

n Speer Roofing to replace roofs on four buildings in the amount of $23,993 at Lakeside Jr./Sr. High School, using Consolidated District 3 Fund

n Pro-Tint to install window film in every classroom window and the office window at Lakeside in the amount of $5,725

n ArCom Systems Inc., to reprogram duct detectors from alarm initiating devices to supervisory initiating devices at North Webster High School, in the amount of $380, using the Springhill Maintenance Fund

n the invoices for Carousel Industries of N. America to replace and upgrade segments of existing wired infrastructure in all of the districts. Finance Director Crevonne Odom says internet infrastructure was upgraded, and for auditing purposes, it had to be in the board minutes what each district paid outside of the E-rates that paid for a large portion of the project.

n Putman Restoration LLC to steam clean the library carpet and tiles and grout in all the restrooms at Brown Upper Elementary in the amount of $949.75, using the Springhill Maintenance Fund

n the purchase of 388 new chairs at E.S. Richardson Elementary from Virco in the amount of $9,983.24, using District 6 half-cent sales tax

n the purchase of six round tables and 36 chairs for the computer lab at Richardson from Virco for $1,682.46

n the advertisement for bids around July 19 for the construction projects at J.A. Phillips Middle School and Webster Junior High School.

n the personnel report.

The board also entered into executive session to discuss a worker’s compensation claim, and when they came out of executive session, District 6 Board Member John Madden made the motion to settle the claim at one and a half years’ salary to the employee not to exceed counsel’s recommendations. District 9 Board Member Frankie Mitchell seconded, and the motion was passed unanimously.

During the superintendent’s report, Rawls asked for a special board meeting to be set at 6 p.m., Monday, July 18 to discuss board policies to include cell phones, parents and transportation and graduation.

The next monthly school board meeting will be Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. Also on that date and time, the 2016 millage rates will be set. The board meets at Central Office, located at 1442 Sheppard Street.
