Celebrating Art, Creativity, and Community in Minden

by David Specht

There’s something special happening in downtown Minden this week—and it’s a reminder of just how important the arts are to a thriving community.

This week, Parish Design Co. will host its Third Annual Decked Out Skateboard Art Show, where local high school students transform blank skateboards into incredible works of art. Students from all across our area have spent the past several weeks designing, painting, and preparing their one-of-a-kind pieces for public display.

At first glance, you might think, “It’s just a fun art show.” But events like this one actually bring far-reaching benefits—not just for the students, but for our entire community.

First, this show gives students an opportunity to explore their creative side. In a world filled with structured lessons and standardized tests, art allows young people to dream, design, and express themselves freely. When we give students a canvas—whether it’s a skateboard, a stage, or a sketchpad—we are giving them the tools to find their voice and build confidence that will last a lifetime.

Second, events like Decked Out reinforce that Minden is a community that supports the arts. Arts education isn’t just about painting or sculpting; it teaches critical thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance. Communities that invest in the arts often see positive ripple effects in education, civic pride, and even economic development.

Third, by hosting vibrant events like this, we invite others to experience Minden. Whether it’s a family member coming to support a student artist, or an art enthusiast curious about the exhibit, visitors will spend time downtown, explore our shops, and see firsthand what makes our city special. The arts don’t just inspire—they attract.

The Decked Out Skateboard Art Show is yet another reminder that great communities don’t happen by accident. They are built by people—like those at Parish Design Co.—who pour their time and energy into giving young people opportunities to shine.

So if you get a chance, head downtown and check out the amazing work these students have created. Celebrate their creativity. Support their efforts. And take pride in being part of a community that knows the value of imagination, inspiration, and art.

It’s just one more reason why Minden continues to be a place where creativity and community go hand in hand.
