TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Grambling State dropped its weekend series finale at Florida A&M, fall 11-9 on Sunday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.
GSU (19-21, 14-7 SWAC) scored nine runs on 11 hits with three errors. FAMU (21-20, 15-6 SWAC) 11 runs on nine hits with one error.
Three Tigers put together multi-hit games. Martavius Thomas went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Trey Bridges and Cameron Hill both went 2-for-4 with Hill hitting a three-run homer and Bridges driving in two runs. Keanu Jacobs-Guishard went 2-for-3 with a double.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the second, Grambling State got on the board with a pair of RBI singles by Trey Burrell and Bridges.
FAMU’s Will Brown hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Rattlers a 4-2 lead. The Rattlers grew their advantage to 8-2 with a four-run fifth.
The Tigers worked their way back in the game in the top of the sixth. With runners on second a third, Burrell hit a grounder that allowed a run to come across. Back-to-Back RBI singles by Thomas and Bridges cut FAMU’s advantage to 8-5.
A three-run homer for FAMU extended its lead to 11-5 in the seventh inning.
Grambling State attempted to mount rally in the eighth inning. After a leadoff double by Jacobs-Guishard and a single by Burrell, an RBI single by Thomas made it an 11-6 game. With two outs in the frame, Hill walloped a three-run homer to pull GSU within two runs at 11-9.
GSU couldn’t complete the comeback bid, however.
Trenton Shaw (1-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits and six walks in two innings of work. He struck out one.
Hampton Phillips (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 K, 2 BB), Javier Martinez (0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 BB) and Ethan Bates (3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 K, 3 BB) all made relief appearances for the Tigers.
