Dorcheat-Bistineau Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met at the Webster Parish Library Stewart Center on November 14. DAR recognizes November as Women’s Issues Month. Our guest speaker was Diana Sanders, co-owner of Mercy’s Closet in Minden. Their mission is to provide low-cost clothing, furniture, and household items to people in need. These items are also free to those who qualify. Mercy’s Closet is open to the public for shopping, and they rely on your donations of gently used clothing and household items. Hostesses for the November meeting were Rachel Harrington and Linda Wood.
Our chapter observed Veterans Day through several projects. Members led by Chapter Regent Cindy Madden, and Jerry Madden, President of Galvez Chapter SAR, met at Savannah Court and Town & Country to participate in their Veterans Day ceremonies on November 11th. Members of our chapter also placed flags on veterans’ graves at Minden Cemetery. This project was led by our Service to America Committee Chair, Jessica Gorman. We are making plans to attend the annual Overton Brooks Christmas party on December 7th. Our chapter will provide sugarfree cookies to the residents.
Chapter Regent Cindy Madden and Chapter Vice Regent Donna Sutton attended the November Louisiana State DAR Board of Management Meeting in Pineville. Cindy served as our chapter voting representative during the Bylaws Amendments session. Our state regent Cheryl Gott discussed her State Regent’s Project proposal. She is planning to raise funds to place a memorial to Lieutenant Fredrick J. Gerstner in the veterans’ memorial park in Lake Charles. He was the namesake of Gerstner Field, a World War I pilot training field near Lake Charles. It was one of 32 WW I pilot training fields in the U.S. The training field no longer exists, and she wants to ensure that its history and memory are preserved as a part of local history.
Cindy Madden gave a presentation at the Webster Parish Library on November 17th. She discussed lineage organizations including Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of 1812, and Magna Charta Dames and Barons, and the genealogical requirements for membership.
Spencer Creech of Fort Jesup Society Children of the American Revolution participated in the annual DAR Junior Membership Firefly 5k. The money raised by the event helps provide funds to Appalachian schools supported by DAR. Spencer is the son of our Chapter Vice Regent, Donna Sutton.
