Bossier Sheriff’s Office detectives have reported a new scam targeting individuals, where the victim will receive an email alleging that their computer and/or cell phone have been infected with a virus. This virus supposedly grants the scammer access to all the information stored on the victim’s devices. The scammer threatens to share any compromising information found on the devices with the victim’s contacts and on social media. To regain control of their computer or phone, the victim is instructed to purchase a specific amount of Bitcoin and send it to a Bitcoin address provided by the scammer. It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unsolicited emails or messages requesting personal information or financial transactions.
Detectives urge the public not to fall for this extortion scam.
