Discovery Camp launches in Webster Parish with summer of reading and STEM

by Amber McDown

Discovery Camp 2025 is underway at Webster Parish Libraries, offering four weeks of reading-centered enrichment activities for school-aged children across Webster Parish.

Running from May 28 through June 28, Discovery Camp is designed to encourage learning outside the classroom, foster a love of reading, and build confidence and independence in young readers. Each week features programming focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with literature as the foundation.

Campers will earn “library bucks” for each book they read and for attending special performances. The earned bucks can be used to redeem prizes, allowing children to apply math skills in a practical setting. Children aged 0 to 11 who read at least five books will receive a certificate of participation and an invitation to a special end-of-camp event. Those who read 30 books will receive a certificate of completion and an award medal.

Special performances include visits from Wild World Texas and Freedom Ranch, magician David LeBoeuf, Steve’s Snaketuary, and the LSU Ag Center’s Germ Cave. These events align with the weekly STEM themes and offer interactive experiences that enhance learning.

Springhill hosted its registration event on Wednesday. The Minden Library Branch hosted registration on Thursday. Campers attending the event explored the STEAM Museum, an interactive exhibit by Mobile Ed Productions.

Thursday’s registration event at the Minden branch was well attended, with children actively engaging in a wide variety of hands-on science activities. Exhibits in the STEAM Museum included mini robots, an archeology dig, and an over-sized version of the game “Operation.” The interactive displays captured the attention of participants, with many campers eagerly moving from station to station to explore, experiment, and learn.

Discovery Camp will conclude with recognition ceremonies in July for qualifying participants. For more information, contact the Minden Library at (318) 371-3080.
