Don Stahl Tourney tips-off Wednesday in Sibley

by Minden Press-Herald

The 2017-18 hoops season will hit full swing in familiar fashion, with the playing of the 24th annual Don Stahl Memorial Tournament.

Don Stahl won 824 games, including a 100-game win streak from 1978-1980, on his way to two state championships as head coach of Sibley High School. The first installment of the tournament in his honor was played in 1993.

Plenty has changed in the years since then, however one thing that remains the same is the quality basketball played throughout northwest Louisiana.

This year’s tournament field is a mixture of faces old and new.

The girls’ bracket is comprised of Lakeside, Minden, Doyline, North Webster, Homer, Haughton, Lakeview, North DeSoto and Northwood- Shreveport.

The boys’ bracket features teams from Lakeside, Minden, Doyline Homer, Ringgold, Red River, Loyola, Lakeview, C.E. Byrd and West Ouachita.

The Lakeview and Byrd boys enter as pre-tournament favorites, while Lakeside will look to catch their football- playing starters up to speed quickly enough to make a run under first-year head coach and Warrior alumn Marlon McDaniel.

Jacob Brown’s Lady Tiders are the favorite on the girls’ side, while Lakeside will compete in their first Don Stahl action under first-year head coach Rendi Dillard. Parish Games
