A Minden man was arrested on felony possession charges after he seemingly fled police.

Edwin James Shuler, 38, of the 600 block of McIntyre Street, was arrested Wednesday, May 27, and charged with possession of Schedule I CDS (marijuana – third offense), and cited for general speed and running a stop sign. Bond was set at $4,600.

“Officer Chris Hammontree observed a vehicle run a stop sign at the corner of Bracken and McArther,” Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said. “He attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, and after he activated his lights and sirens, the vehicle continued for more than three blocks.”

Shuler got up to a speed of 35 in a 25 mile per hour zone, but he stopped on Clerk Street near Howell, according to reports. When Hammontree made contact with Shuler, he reportedly smelled an “overwhelming” odor of suspected marijuana coming from the vehicle.

“At that time, he located one gram of marijuana in a cigarette wrapper next to the emergency brake (inside the vehicle),” Cropper said. “Shuler told him he had two previous convictions on his record for marijuana, which was later confirmed through NCIC.”
Shuler was placed under arrest and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center on the above charges.
