Fannie Moore: Searching for the real rest

by Minden Press-Herald

These past several months have been wearing on both of us. There are signs of aging, of physical ailments, and just overall tiredness and listlessness.

We have not had the energy to do the things that need to be done and certainly not the extra things that we have always enjoyed doing. No energy for shopping and we barely make it through the store to purchase groceries and other necessities. No energy for the required doctor visits, but we force ourselves to make the visits in hopes that we can find that “miracle cure”.

Not only do we find ourselves confined to home more, but also missing our regular church attendance. We are unable to attend the many funeral services of our friends and relatives. And it seems as if there are so many recently.

We can listen to our Sunday church services on the internet, however we are unable to have that Christian fellowship and be of service to our church

I was feeling down and sorry for myself as I realized we were missing so much of life.

Until I read a devotional recently that captured my attention and made me realize, that perhaps I was “ just feeling sorry for myself.”

Matthew 11:28 reads: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

We know that life can wear us down, by aging, sickness and necessary chores of everyday life. We can be physically, mentally, and emotionally tired.

While the message from Matthew may refer to our spiritual weariness, we realize that our everyday life problems can attibute much to that spiritual exhaustion.

We must learn to accept our infirmities and realize that we aren’t the only ones with these problems. We must acnowledge there are others who may be suffering more than we are. We must go to God’s Word for comfort and solace. We must avoid the “sinful” pity-party and go to Him for help.

For He promises if we come to Him (those who labour and are heavy laden) He will give us rest.

Fannie Moore lives in Shongaloo.
