After another outstanding effort for most of the game, Glenbrook head coach Drew Maddox must be frustrated by little things costing the Apaches on the scoreboard.
Just like in the week one loss against Clinton Christian, Glenbrook stayed in the game well into the second half before falling apart in a 48-21 home loss to Park Place Christian on Friday night.
“We have to keep getting better and giving maximum effort,” Maddox said. “I think we were better tonight than last week, but we still don’t know quite how to win just yet.”
Park Place scored on their first possession on a 39-yard touchdown run by Josh Jones. Marshall Meek fumbled on the following Glenbrook possession, and Park Place nearly capitalized. The Crusaders marched down the field quickly before Apache linebacker D.J. Carter came up with a huge goal-line fumble to give Glenbrook the ball.
The Apaches stalled on offense, and the Crusaders were rolling. Soon, it was 21-0 with 4:00 remaining in the first half.
On the next Glenbrook possession, sophomore quarterback Jackson Powell completed a 30-yard pass to Sammy Feaster to put the Apaches inside the red zone. Powell scored soon after on a two-yard quarterback keeper that brought the score to 21-7 at halftime.
Glenbrook started the second half with an onside kick and Andrew Moore recovered it for the Apaches. Then Powell completed a 30-yard pass to Cale Hollis. Meek dove for a first down on a fourth-and-1 that kept the drive alive before Powell kept the ball on an option play for a one-yard touchdown. After a blocked extra point, the score was 21-13 with 8:41 left in the game.
“We were right there in the game at that point,” Maddox said. “But big plays hurt us, and we didn’t tackle at all.”
The following kickoff, Park Place kick returner ran the ball back 65-yards for a touchdown that put the Crusaders back up 28-13.
Glenbrook had a miscommunication on a dead play the following possession and fumbled a snap that gave the ball right back to Park Place.
The Crusaders scored again on the next possession out of a screen pass that went for 42 yards and brought the score to 35-13.
“I tell the guys that they can’t get weary of doing right,” Maddox said. “At the end of the day it’s the same as last week. We did some good things but we need rapid improvement if we want to win.”
Glenbrook travels to Baker, Louisiana next Friday for their first road game of the season at Central Private.
PINELAND JAMBOREE
North Webster 24, Cedar Creek 6
North Webster started their year off on a positive note in the Pineland Jamboree at Minden’s “The Pit” on Friday. The Knights defeated Cedar Creek 24-6.
North Webster head coach John Ware said the Knights played to their strengths and started the season well.
“We ran the ball really well tonight,” Ware said. “That opens up so many things for us. We made athletic plays. Scottie Johnson scored three times for us tonight out of the slot, made some athletic plays for us.”
Over the summer the Knights have switched from a Wing-T offense to a power spread.
“We had a backup quarterback in there tonight and still executed well out of the spread,” Ware said.
The team’s bread and butter this year is looking to be it’s defensive line.
“We have a lot of depth at D-line, that’s for sure,” Ware said. “That kept us in the game. Our defense started a little slow, but they definitely bounced back and played well the rest of the night.”
