High school baseball: Lakeside, Minden fall in Bistineau Classic; Doyline rallies for win in Simboro tournament

A seventh-inning rally came up just short as Lakeside fell to Byrd 9-8 Thursday on the first day of the Bistineau Classic hosted by Lakeside.

In the first game at Lakeside, Cedar Creek defeated Many 8-4. In two tournament games at Minden’s field, Airline defeated Pine Tree, Texas, 10-0 in five innings and Minden 5-0.

Doyline split games in the Simsboro tournament. The Panthers fell to Haynesville 19-5 and rallied past Simsboro 7-4.

At Lakeside, Byrd scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-4 lead.

Jon Jon Dick and Gage Williams led off the bottom of the inning with singles. After Eli Campbell walked to load the bases, Dick scored on a passed ball. Drake Chreene then scored Williams and Campbell with a double to make it 9-7.

Chreene advanced to third on Jake Glass’ sacrifice bunt. Brock Case’s sacrifice fly cut the lead to one. Hayden Williams was hit by a pitch, but a groundout ended the game.

The Warriors led 1-0 through five innings. Byrd scored five in the top of the sixth and Lakeside answered with three in the bottom.

Chreene went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Dick went 2-for-3. Williams went 2-for-4 with a double.

At Minden, Airline led 1-0 through three innings then put up four in the top of the fourth.

Landyn Huddleston had two of Minden’s three hits, including a double. Keegan Pope also had a double.

Bryson Ranger went the distance. He scattered eights hits, struck out three and walked three. 

The tournament continues Friday with two games at Lakeside. Minden (3-5) faces Many at 4 p.m. and Lakeside (3-6) takes on Cedar Creek after that.

At Simsboro, Noah Spears struck out 16 and walked just one in the victory over Simsboro. He gave up five hits.

The Panthers trailed 4-2 after six innings then scored five in the top of the seventh with two outs.

Kenneth  Anderson walked and Kayson Wilk was hit by a pitch. Dario Galvez’s bunt loaded the bases.

James Dodge’s single combined with an error scored three runs and put the Panthers on top 5-4. Spears drew a walk. Zach Normand’s fly ball resulted in an error and two more runs scored.

Spears struck out the side in the bottom of the inning. Dodge finished 3-for-4.

Normand went 2-for-4 against Haynesville. Spears hit a home run and drew two walks. Jonas Florence had two RBI.

Doyline (3-1) hosts Southwood Monday at 5.
