High school baseball: Minden falls just short in pitchers’ duel; Lakeside sweeps Mansfield

The Minden Crimson Tide dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Loyola College Prep Flyers in a District 1-4A game Thursday at Minden.

Elsewhere, Lakeside swept Mansfield 20-0 and 19-0 in a District 3-2A doubleheader at Lakeside.

At Minden, the game was a pitchers’ duel.

Minden’s Jaxon Smith and Loyola’s Gavin Brint pitched complete games.

Smith allowed five hits and one earned run. He struck out three and walked two. Brint allowed four hits, struck out nine and walked one.

Loyola scored first in the top of the fourth on an error and single by Cole Pryor with two outs.

Minden answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Landyn Huddleston led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Bryson Ranger. He reached third on a groundout by Smith. Huddleston scored on an error off a grounder by Hudson Brown.

The Flyers scored what proved to be the winning run in top of the sixth with two outs on consecutive singles by Kingston Adams, Hayden Horton and John Luke Lauve.

The Tide put runners on in the sixth and seventh but were unable to advance them.

Landon Brewer went 2-for-3.

Minden (14-10, 0-4) begins a two-game district series against North DeSoto Tuesday at 6 in Stonewall. Loyola improved to 16-7 and 4-0.

At Lakeside, Jon Jon Dick and Jake Glass had three hits each in the two-inning first game. Dick had a double and three RBI. Glass had a triple and two RBI:

Eli Campbell and Noah Redding had two hits each. Campbell had a triple and three RBI. Brock Case had a double and two RBI. Drake Chreene had two RBI. Peyton Gray had a triple.

Gray struck out five.

Gray, Gage Williams and Chreene had two hits apiece in the second game. Williams and Chreene had three RBI each. Gray and Redding had two each. Maddox Cascio had a double.

Campbell pitched a perfect two innings with three strikeouts.

Lakeside (13-13, 5-3) hosts Grant Tuesday at 6.
