High school baseball: Smith pitches two-hitter as Minden rallies past Cecilia in first-round series opener

The No. 14 seed Minden Crimson Tide scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past No. 19 Cecilia 3-2 in Game 1 of the their best-of-3 non-select Division II first-round playoff series Thursday night at home.

The Tide (20-14) and Bulldogs (17-15) will play Game 2 Friday at 6. Game 3, if necessary, will be Saturday at 1.

Minden scored all three runs with two outs. Bryson Ranger got the rally started with a single.

Landon Brewer, Hudson Brown and Jaxon Smith drew consecutive walks to get the Tide within one.

Keegan Pope hit a ground ball and reached on an error. Brewer and Jamall Carey, running for Brown, both scored.

Cecilia put a runner on base with one out. But Smith induced a popout and flyout to end the game.

Smith pitched a two-hitter. He struck out 11 and walked only one.

Brown went 2-for-2.  Topher Wilson had a single.

Cecilia’s Blake Gautreaux allowed only four hits and three walks.

No. 13 seed Lakeside opens its best-of-3 non-select Division III first-round series against No. 20 Crowley Friday at 6. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2. Game 3, if necessary, will immediately follow.

No. 24 North Webster fell to No. 9 French Settlement 10-3 in Game 1 of their best-of-3 non-select Division III first-round series at French Settlement.

The Knights (11-2) and Lions will play Game 2 Friday at 3. Game 3, if necessary, will follow at 5:30.
