High school softball: Lakeside, Glenbrook come up just short in quarterfinals

The Lakeside Lady Warriors and Glenbrook Lady Apaches came up just short in quarterfinal playoff games Friday.

Lakeside, the No. 2 seed, fell to No. 7 Mangham 4-2 in a non-select Division IV game at Lakeside. Glenbrook, the No. 10 seed, lost to No. 2 and defending champion Opelousas Catholic 4-1 in a select Division IV game in Opelousas.

The Lady Warriors and Lady Apaches both had outstanding seasons. Lakeside, which reached the quarterfinals for the first time in school history, finished 26-6. Glenbrook, which made the quarterfinals for the first time since joining the LHSAA, finished 25-9.

At Lakeside, Mangham (18-11) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the the fifth.

Lakeside took the lead with two in the bottom of the sixth. Emily Jones, Raleah Harris and Teal Jones had consecutive two-out singles. Austin’s single scored Jones and Harris.

But the Lady Dragons scored three in the top of the seventh. All three came with two outs.

Mangham led off with back-to-back singles. 

With two strikes against her and two outs, Kennedy McMurry tied the game with a single. Madeline Wiggins followed with a double, giving the Lady Dragons the 4-2 lead.

Lakeside didn’t threaten in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Warriors had seven hits. Jones went 2-for-3. McKenna Chreene, Meredith Robinson and Moose Jernigan also had singles.

Chreene struck out eight and walked none. 

Mangham pitcher Abbigail Hardy went 3-for-3. 

At Opelousas Catholic, the Lady Vikings (23-8) scored all four runs in the first three innings. 

Glenbrook scored one in the top of the fifth. Chloe Gregg led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hadley Haynes. She scored on a wild pitch.

Opelousas Catholic’s Ashley Little pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Glenbrook’s Vivian Still and Colby Hollis had singles. Rebecca Mosley struck out five and walked one. She allowed only three singles in the final three innings.
