Jambalaya cookoff registering teams now

by Amber McDown

The Jambin’ on Main Jambalaya Cookoff is set for Saturday, November 2, in the Civic Center parking lot. Hosted by Minden Main Street, the event is still registering teams, with a deadline of November 1. “We are only taking about 20 teams. We are halfway filled up already,” said Minden Main Street Board Member Sarah Overall.

Teams can include up to four participants, consisting of one chief cook and up to three assistants. The registration fee is $100 per team. Contestants must be ready to serve food to the public by 11 AM, with setup beginning at 7:30 AM. Judging is expected to be completed by 2 PM. To register, visit www.mindenla.org/mainstreet-page/ and select Jambin’ on Main Cookoff.

One of the guest judges will be Phillip Norred, host of the food blog Phillip’s Kitchen. In addition to the judged competition, a People’s Choice award will be decided by public votes, cast using armbands. “We want people to come out and taste too,” Overall said.

The cookoff will also feature Cajun and Zydeco music, along with Louisiana beer. Local residents are encouraged to attend and enjoy some of the state’s finest jambalaya.
