In a close vote for Speaker of the House, Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson (R-LA 04)
of Benton won the vote for Speaker with a majority of the votes cast by a margin of 220 votes to 209 votes. Johnson was running for the position against Democratic Minority Leader Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Johnson is the fourth Republican to be brought forth to run for the position of Speaker after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted over two weeks ago in early October.
Johnson was the first Republican able to get the majority 217 votes needed to gain the position of Speaker of the House since McCarthy was voted out of the position. Johnson becomes the first congressman from Louisiana to be elected as Speaker of the House.
