Karen’s Korner,
Last week we started a short series concerning these sometimes, devastating days of heat and oppressive humidity to come. We talked about watches and warnings and the differences, and now we are going to cover some of the hints to make these times more bearable.
Healthline.com included the following:
Be sure your home has adequate ventilation. –
Achieving good home ventilation requires a strategy based in science. And it often includes exciting home-improvement tools like soffits, attic baffles, spray foam, caulk, correctly-vented bathroom fans, stove fans, dryer vents, duct sealing, and more. (Pioneerminisplit.com)
Keep your home as cool as possible by considering the following strategies:
Utilize Extractor Fans: Use extractor fans to remove hot air from your home, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. These methods can significantly help in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature during extreme heat!’ (British Gas)
Use Landscaping to Beat the Heat –“ Increase tree percentage in parks and green spaces…Provide shade on sites…Use plant materials and water instead of hardscape…
Switch to green ground cover, including grasses and shrubs…Plant shade trees…” (lawnstarter.com)
I hope some of these hints will be helpful this summer…If you have questions, contact us at the Webster Parish Council on Aging, 318-371-3056!
