Karen’s Korner: Week Two of Safety Issues

by Minden Press-Herald

Karen’s Korner,

Last week I covered falls which is the leading cause of injuries among Senior Adults. This week I will be talking about a balanced diet and making wise food choices.

The long-term effects of unhealthy eating are serious. According to Stay Fit, Get Healthy, unhealthy eating may increase a person’s risk for diseases such as diabetes and heart-related conditions, as well as weak bones, malnutrition and high blood sugar levels. These can ultimately result in breaks, diabetes and a plethora of related conditions.

However, if we are aware of some very basic information concerning Senior Adult diets, we can slow or decrease the effects of a poor diet. Here are some helpful things to consider that will help us all have a much more balanced diet as Seniors:

Add fiber to meals with food such as whole grains, and raw fruits and vegetables. Fiber is essential!

Reduce your cholesterol and fat intake and make smarter choices by enjoying or preparing food with healthy fats, which include olive oil, avocados, salmon and walnuts.

Eat foods that are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Limit foods that are high in processed sugars, saturated and trans fats, and salt.

Adjust your diet to manage chronic health conditions. Talk to your doctor.

Eat seafood, dairy or fortified soy alternatives, beans, peas, and lentils to help maintain muscle mass.

Add fresh fruit and vegetables to your meals and snacks.

It’s never too late to change your diet for the better. You will not only feel better, but you will keep those added pounds off and live longer as well.
