Men’s college basketball: Grambling State cruises past Alabama A&M

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University easily disposed of Alabama A&M on Thursday night, defeating the Bulldogs 67-51 on Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Center.

GSU (10-20 overall, 7-10 SWAC) was locked in offensively shooting 55.3 percent from the field (26-of-47) and dominating the paint outscoring AAMU 40-18 underneath the basket. 

James Flippin followed his stellar performance on Monday with an 18-point outing on Thursday. The junior forward from Milwaukee, Wisc. shot 80 percent from field going 8-of-10. He also snagged two rebounds. 

Kintavious Dozier also scored in double-figures for the Tigers adding 11 points with three assists, two rebounds and a steal. 

With Grambling State leading 9-7 with 11:57 remaining in the first half, the Tigers used a 14-3 run sparked by an Ernest Ross layup and capped by a bucket by Dozier to take a 23-10 lead with 5:30 on the clock. 

Louis Hutchinson pushed the advantage to 27-12 with a deep 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark. The Bulldogs briefly cut GSU’s lead to single digits, 27-18, but the Tigers quickly pushed its advantage back to double figure before the end of the half. 

Flippin closed the first half scoring with a turnaround jumper on a feed from Dozier to make it 35-19 heading into the half. 

Alabama A&M was never able to threaten Grambling State in the second second half as the Tigers maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the period. Antwan Burnett gave GSU a 52-34 lead, its largest of the night, on a layup with 10:08 left in the contest.

The Bulldogs never got closer than 11 points in the closing 10 minutes of the game as the Tigers cruised to the 67-51 win. 

AAMU was paced by Sailou Seye and Dylan Mclean who scored 10 points apiece. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 55.3 percent from the field (26-of-47) and 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range. GSU was 11-of-13 at the free throw line (84.6 percent). 
  • Grambling State grabbed 26 rebounds.
  • GSU committed 11 turnovers. 
  • The Tigers scored 40 points in the paint, 25 bench points, 13 points off turnovers, 13 fastbreak points and seven second chance points.
  • Alabama A&M shot 32.7 percent from the floor (17-of-52) and 27.3 percent from behind the arc (6-of-22). BCU was 11-of-16 at the charity stripe (68.8 percent) 
  • The Bulldogs pulled down 23 rebounds.
  • Alabama A&M committed 14 turnovers.
  • AAMU finished with 18 points in the paint, 15 fastbreak points, 14 points off turnovers, 14 bench points and six second chance points.
