Minden to take on Northwood in homecoming showdown

The Minden Crimson Tide has run their record to 6-3 on the season heading into Friday’s huge Homecoming showdown with the Northwood Falcons.

The game has all kinds of implications.

The Tide will want to play well for what’s going to be a large crowd with many Crimson Alumni sprinkled throughout. Also still in play is the possibility of earning a home playoff game at The Pit next week. Last, but certainly not least in the minds of Crimson Tide coaches and players is the chance to finish with either a share or the outright district title.

“It’s exciting,” Tide head coach Spencer Heard said. “It’s exciting to be playing in these meaningful games. It’s nice to have future things on the table based on how we do in this game Friday night. We’re excited, hopefully we’ll be in front of a big, home crowd.”

The Tide has been working hard at practice this week to get ready for a Northwood team that defeated them 67-34 last season.

“We’ve had a couple good days,” Heard said. “It was kind of wet out there so we had to go in the gym, but we’ve had two good days an I think our focus is there.”

This year’s Northwood team has been decimated by injuries. At one point this season the Falcons were down 8 starters. One of those who will be missing from Friday’s game is last year’s district MVP, Aaron Varelas.

“I told the guys I think they’re going to come out and play pretty hard,” Heard said. “Don’t get sucked in to anything about their record. They’re pretty good up front and they have a couple good receivers. This young quarterback has been playing about half the season and he’s gotten better each week. I think we have to come out and play our ‘A’ game.”

The Tide and Falcons will kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday night at The Pit.
