NLTCC hosts third annual manufacturing camp

Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) held the first week of its third annual Nuts, Bolts, & Thingamajig Manufacturing Camp July 8-11. Ten junior high and high school boys participated in the program, gaining hands-on experience in a range of manufacturing skills, including welding, advanced manufacturing, industrial maintenance, electrical, and CDL, as well as other programs offered by NLTCC. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the camp, discovering new interests and skills.

The students utilized state-of-the-art equipment used by adult students at NLTCC to complete their projects. “We want to excite them about the potential of careers in the technical fields,” said Robert McGuire, director of dual enrollment.

This year’s camp included a trip to the Shreveport campus to explore programs such as HVAC, electrical, automotive, and lineworker. The camp concluded with a guided tour of Fibrebond, highlighting various job opportunities available in Minden. Students were introduced to Fibrebond’s electrical internship program, which offers $15 per hour for high school students who have completed their junior year and $17 per hour for college interns to learn this skilled trade.

This year NLTCC offered two week-long camps. Instructor Robert McGuire hopes to expand the program and plans to offer the camp at other NLTCC campuses in the future. Thanks were extended to Fibrebond for providing transportation, the tour, and lunch.

NLTCC’s Manufacturing Camp aims to inspire youth by providing practical experience and exposure to technical careers, addressing the skilled trades shortage and opening doors to future job opportunities.
