Phillip’s Cottage 5K to honor local pastor, benefit transitional home

The inaugural Phillip’s Cottage 5K will take place April 12 in Minden, raising funds for Phillip’s Cottage, a transitional home for women with children graduating from Louisiana Adult & Teen Challenge.

The event honors the legacy of Phillip Carroll, a longtime educator and pastor in Webster Parish known for his deep love for people and his passion for running. Carroll, who ran three miles daily, collapsed from a brain bleed on May 30, 2023, while preparing for his morning run.

His daughter, Sara McDaniel, established Phillip’s Cottage, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to continue his lifelong mission of serving others. The home will provide transitional housing for up to three women and their children, offering private bedrooms—an amenity not available in the Adult & Teen Challenge program.

“My dad spent his entire life serving in ministry and the public school system, and I know nothing would make him happier than knowing his work is being carried on beyond the grave,” McDaniel said. “In addition to loving people well, he also loved to run. His birthday is April 15, and my plan is to hold Phillip’s 5K every year around his birthday to support Phillip’s Cottage—combining two things he cared deeply about: people and running.”

The 5K walk/run, fun run, and silent runner opportunities are open to participants. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses, and those unable to attend in person can still support the cause as silent runners.
