Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Joyce Cockrell Mears, age 91, of Taylor, AR will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, LA with Bro. Randy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Ivan, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.
Mrs. Mears was born on August 6, 1933 to Stephen Allen and Lillian (Lewis) Cockrell in Haynesville, LA and passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2025 in Chattanooga, TN. She was a resident of Taylor, AR and a former resident of Ivan and Minden, LA. She attended the First Baptist Church in Taylor, AR and was a graduate of Haynesville High School. She married Allen L. Mears, Jr. in 1951. She worked at Minden Memorial Center. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Mears grew peaches and one of the new varieties, ‘Glory’, was named by Mrs. Mears.
Mrs. Mears was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allen Lavern Mears, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Nicki Mears; and her brother James Weldon Cockrell.
Surviving are two sons, James Allen Mears of Chattanooga, TN, and John Stephen Mears and wife, Celia, of Bryant, AR; grandchildren, Joe Mears, Kate Baldschun, Amanda Moulthrop and husband, Matt, Marc Mann, Thomas Mears, Jonah Mears, and Charlotte Mears; great-grandchildren, Jack Crowe, Jane Crowe, Reed Moulthrop, Jasper Moulthrop, Wyatt Mears; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 10:00 am to service time at Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.
