The suspect in the fatal shooting at the Hillside Apartments last week has been apprehended, according to the Minden Police Department.
Detectives say the incident appears to have been a robbery gone wrong. On Wednesday, October 9, around 11 PM, police responded to a call reporting a man found dead at the apartments. Officers discovered 36-year-old Dequincy Jones lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. A firearm was found near his feet.
“Evidence on scene made it look like a suicide,” said Detective Sergeant Lee. “However, training says to treat all suicides like homicides until proven otherwise.”
Through multiple sources, police learned that Jones had arranged to meet someone from Shreveport to purchase a gun. Autopsy results later revealed that the bullet responsible for Jones’ death was from a different caliber than the firearm found at the scene, giving detectives evidence that it was a homicide.
Witnesses helped identify the suspect as 23-year-old Michael Kingston. By Saturday night, police obtained a warrant for his arrest. Kingston was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Shreveport on October 15.
Kingston faces charges in Minden of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and felon in possession of a firearm. He also faces charges in Shreveport, including felon in possession of a firearm, flight from police, and forgery.
“It was 72 hours, roughly, between the time that we got the call and the time we got the warrant signed,” said Detective Lee, crediting the fast resolution to the team’s tireless work, which included interviews, door-to-door inquiries, and reviewing surveillance footage.
