O. Banks and F.M. Douglas – Minden, Louisiana
Lady Whistledown is baaack! And she is delighted; but moreover, compelled to share with Min ‘den’ the events of this past social season. She has vowed that she will not leave out any of the juicy, delicious details! So, grab your tea and hold on to your cup…
(Lady Whistledown’s voice)… AHHH Gentlest Readers, as you may remember, in December of last year, the prospective debutantes “spilled tea” and “met” us at an Introductory Tea at the Minden High School Tea Room Auditorium. Then, they put the “tea” in team when they delivered holiday cheer items to the residents of Meadowview Nursing Home and Rehab Facility.
Since January, they have participated in a number of “tea” rrific, fun, character-building and community service activities and have been like busy, little bees in the Spring time! Everything from “Blessing Bags” for the residents at Red Oak Villa/Sheppard Street High Rise Apartments to …church services, MLK activities, community engagement and cultural enrichment. The prospective debutantes also had the opportunity to visit Atlanta, Georgia, for an HBCU colleges’ tour as well as a visit to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center in downtown Atlanta.
On April 12, 2025, they attended the Strand Theatre in Shreveport to watch the Orchesis Dance Company of Grambling State University and Legacy Dance Studio of Shreveport perform a modern ballet tribute, “Dance His High Praise.”
But is there anything more special than the futures of these beautiful young ladies? And just like that, (snaps her fingers), it came to this author’s attention that once again, the social season has come to an end. You see, my dearest readers, the debutante ball and the formal presentation of the 23 young debutantes into society has occurred!
And this is hot off the presses…so mark my words, that glorious night of Tiaras, Tuxedos and ‘Bridgerton’ Flair will surely bring the ‘Den’ and the young ladies’ families, guests, friends and mentors, something to buzz about for days, weeks, months and even years to come. This is what happened…
Under the soft glow of flickering candelabras and the refined hush of a live band, the Minden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its highly anticipated Debutante Ball, a grand evening themed, “Timeless: Tiaras and Tuxedos.” Drawing inspiration from the opulent world of Bridgerton, this year’s celebration blended modern grace with old-world charm in shades of black, white and silver–creating a truly magical experience for debutantes and guests alike.
Held at the Minden Civic Center on April 26, the ball was a culmination of months of mentorship, service, and personal growth for the 23 young women selected as this year’s debutantes. The theme evoked the elegance of a bygone era, complete with sweeping gowns, crisp white gloves, and classic tuxedos — all the hallmarks of Regency-inspired refinement.
From the moment the debutantes entered the ball auditorium, escorted by their charming, handsome, young gentlemen in tails and bow ties, the atmosphere was steeped in tradition and elegance. Each young lady was presented to society with poise and confidence, adorned in stunning white gowns that shimmered like moonlight. Their tiaras — symbols of achievement and transition — crowned them as not only ‘Belles of the Ball,’ but also as future leaders in their communities. Their curtsies were a grateful “thank you” to those who unconditionally love, care for and support them.
“The Bridgerton-style theme was the perfect way to honor tradition while celebrating modern young women,” said Mrs. Yolanda D. Smith, President of the Minden Alumnae Chapter. “These debutantes represent beauty, brilliance, and service. Tonight was about more than just glamour — it was about legacy.”
The evening included a waltz that would make Lady Danbury proud, choreographed to a lush instrumental rendition of a popular contemporary tune — a nod to the show’s signature musical style. Families, mentors, and sorority members looked on with pride as the debutantes glided across the floor, their movements reflecting the refinement and discipline instilled throughout their cotillion training.
Throughout the program, the young women were recognized not only for their grace but for their academic achievements, volunteer efforts, and character. “Miss Congeniality” (Miss Devin Harris); Deb of the Year (Miss Tatiyana Mason); GBF—Gentle But Fierce (Miss Saniya Morris); Notable P.E.E.P.—Persistent, Endearing, Energetic and Professional Recognition (Miss Elaine Sims) and (Miss J’Kleeah Willis) Leadership Recognition; honors were awarded, speeches were delivered, and applause rang out in celebration of the bright futures that lie ahead.
The Debutante Ball remains a cherished, honored tradition for the Minden Alumnae Chapter — a celebration of excellence, service, culture, and empowerment. And with this year’s Timeless theme, it proved once again that true elegance, like the spirit of service, never goes out of style.
As the final notes of the evening faded and tiaras and crisp gloves were gently tucked away, one truth remained clear: these young women were not just stepping into society — they were stepping into greatness.
Ahhh! Gentlest Readers… And finally, I too, must step into greatness and leave the ‘den,’ but I am most impressed and certainly sure our 23 princess debutantes will live Happily Ever After. Lady Whistledown (with a curtsy) and OUT!
