Tourism That Floats Our Boat

by David Specht

There’s something special about springtime in Webster Parish. The flowers bloom, the air warms, and our scenic landscapes seem to invite us outside to explore. And there’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of our region than from the water.

On Saturday, May 17, Visit Webster Parish will once again host the Lake Bistineau Spring Paddle—a five-mile excursion through the cypress- and tupelo-lined waters of Lake Bistineau. Whether you’re in a kayak, canoe, or pirogue, this event offers a peaceful (and photogenic) way to connect with nature.

But beyond the serenity of the paddle and the fun of the post-trip fish fry, events like this do something even more meaningful—they keep Webster Parish on the map and in the hearts and minds of potential visitors.

When you think of economic development, tourism might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, tourism is a powerful economic driver. Visitors spend money at local restaurants, stay in our hotels and cabins, shop in our stores, and explore our attractions. That money supports jobs, small businesses, and even our tax base.

Events like the Spring Paddle are more than just calendar fillers—they are intentional investments in the visibility and vitality of our parish.

Think about it. One great day on Lake Bistineau could lead a first-time visitor to plan a weekend getaway here. Maybe they come back to attend another festival, or bring friends along next time. These small moments add up to a bigger impact.

That’s why it’s so important that we, as a community, continue to support and promote events like this. Whether you participate in the paddle, volunteer, or simply spread the word, your involvement helps fuel our local tourism economy.

I applaud the ongoing efforts of Visit Webster Parish and other organizations working to showcase the best of what we have to offer—from our waterways and trails to our charming downtowns and community festivals. Their work often goes unseen, but it has very real effects.

So, if you’re looking for a reason to get outdoors, reconnect with nature, and enjoy some true Webster Parish hospitality, mark your calendar for May 17. Bring your sunscreen, your sense of adventure—and your appetite for fried fish.

And even if paddling isn’t your thing, let’s all remember: supporting tourism supports us all.
