Upcoming election to feature constitutional amendments, propositions, and local races

by Minden Press-Herald

Residents of Webster Parish are encouraged to head to the polls on Saturday, Dec. 7, to cast their votes on proposed constitutional amendments, local tax propositions, and municipal races. The ballot includes significant issues impacting the state and local communities.

Proposed Constitutional Amendments

Four amendments to the Louisiana Constitution are up for consideration:

Amendment No. 1
Voters will decide whether to allow the Louisiana Supreme Court to sanction judges after an investigation by the judiciary commission. The amendment would also change the appointment process for members of the judiciary commission.

Amendment No. 2
This amendment proposes requiring the legislature to wait at least 48 hours before concurring in a conference committee report or amendments to bills appropriating money.

Amendment No. 3
This amendment seeks to allow the legislature to extend regular sessions in two-day increments, up to a maximum of six days, for the purpose of passing appropriations bills.

Amendment No. 4
Voters will decide whether to eliminate mandatory tax sales for unpaid property taxes. Instead, the legislature would establish procedures, limit penalties and interest, and allow property tax payment postponements under certain conditions.

Parishwide Propositions

Webster Parish voters will also consider two millage renewals:

Proposition No. 1: Millage Renewal for Parish Services
This renewal continues a 2.78-mill property tax for 10 years, starting in 2026. It funds the maintenance, operation, and improvement of the Webster Parish Courthouse, Annex, Health Unit, and Agricultural Extension Service. The tax is expected to generate approximately $788,000 annually.

Proposition No. 2: Council on Aging Millage
This 1.75-mill property tax, starting in 2025, supports facilities and programs for elderly residents through the Webster Council on Aging. It is projected to raise about $500,000 annually.

Municipal Races

In the Town of Cullen, voters will choose between Terry “Bippy” Hoof (no party) and Doris L. White (D) for mayor. In Cotton Valley, Delvin Hawkins (D) and Evelyn Parish (D) are running for alderman.

Election Details

Residents are urged to review the amendments, propositions, and candidates before Election Day. Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Saturday, December 7. Voter participation is crucial to shaping the future of Webster Parish and Louisiana.
