The original trilogy starred Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Laurence Fishburne as Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus, respectively. In an apocalyptic world, they fought against machines that have imprisoned much of humanity in a simulated reality known as the Matrix. The trademark of the franchise was a slow-motion technique dubbed “bullet time” that other films attempted to rip off, but few could duplicate to the same effect.

The Matrix Resurrections Release Date: When will the fourth Matrix film come out?

The Matrix Resurrections was originally scheduled to release on May 21, 2021, in the US and UK, before it was pushed back due to filming delays to April 1, 2022. However, Warner Bros. moved the film’s release date forward to December 22, 2021, putting it in competition with The King’s Man and Downtown Abbey.

Originally, The Matrix Resurrections was going to be released on the same day as Reeves’ John Wick 4, but now the two films will be released apart with John Wick coming out on May 21, 2022.

Warner Bros announced that it’s releasing all of its 2021 films on HBO Max and in movie theaters simultaneously in the U.S. so that means HBO Max subscribers will be able to watch Neo’s return on December 22, 2021, as well.

HOW TO WATCH The Matrix Resurrections

Like we mentioned above, the film will be available to watch in theaters or at home. If you choose to stream Resurrections, however, you will need a subscription to HBO Max (the digital streaming service owned by WarnerMedia). Plans start at $9.99 a month, though the lowest tier does come with ads. The ad-free package clocks in at $14.99 a month. Annual memberships will run you $99.99 a year or $149.99 a year.

It should be noted that the major WB film releases are only available to watch via the ad-free plan. Moreover, those big titles only stay on the platform for a month before continuing out their life cycle in theaters.

The Matrix 4, the next film in the series has now been given a proper title. Appropriately, it is to be called The Matrix: Resurrections. Attendees at CinemaCon in Las Vegas were treated to an exclusive showing of the film’s trailer, where the title was revealed for the first time.

The movie will have some loose ends to tie up and some explaining to do, particularly given that lead characters Neo and Trinity were thought to have died in The Matrix Revolutions.

The Matrix Resurrections: What will the sequel be about?

Lana Wachowski hasn’t revealed any plot details about The Matrix Resurrections, so it’s still unclear how Neo and Trinity will return, but there have been rumors on how Neo will come back. However, there are some clues we can look at to give us an idea of how the story will unfold, such as Reeves’s buzzcut hair hinting that Neo will be stepping outside the Matrix again in the sequel. You can also check out the new trailer in the latter half of this article to give you a better idea of what you can expect.

The Matrix Resurrections screenplay is being co-written by Lana Wachowski, Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell, and The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon, so expect the plot to be well-written and dense.

On Aug. 26, Lilly Wachowski, the co-director of the original Matrix trilogy, recently explained why she’s not returning to the franchise to helm The Matrix Resurrections.

“I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before and sort of walk over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling and really the opposite,” Wachowski said. “Like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes in a way. And I didn’t want to do that.”

The Matrix Resurrections: Who’s returning and who are the newcomers?

As we said, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles in The Matrix Resurrections as Neo and Trinity, despite both characters being dead at the end of The Matrix Revolutions.

Set photos have already revealed Neo and Trinity back in action, but there’s no word on how they will return yet.

Other returning cast members are Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, the character she played in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and Daniel Bernhardt reprising his role as, Agent Johnson.

Lambert Wilson is apparently back as the Merovingian, and if does return, it’s likely that Monica Bellucci will reprise her role as Persephone, the wife of the Merovingian.

Hugo Weaving was in negotiations to reprise his role as Agent Smith, but those fell through because of his commitments to London’s National Theatre. Lawrence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original The Matrix trilogy, told the New York magazine that he was not asked to return, but he wishes the production well.
